MP3 Tag Editor - Fix Titles and Add Cover Art

Edit ID3 tags on an MP3 right in your browser: title, artist, album, year, track, genre and cover art. Only the tag header is rewritten, so the audio itself is never touched or re-encoded.

Tags are read and rewritten right here in your browser. The MP3 file itself is never uploaded.

How ID3 tags are stored, and why editing them is lossless

An MP3 file is really two things stitched together: a block of ID3 tag data and a stream of audio frames the player decodes into sound. ID3v2 tags sit at the start of the file as a small header followed by individual frames, one per field, TIT2 for title, TPE1 for artist, APIC for the cover image. ID3v1 is different: a fixed 128-byte block at the very end of the file, with just 30 characters each for title, artist and album.

Because the tag data and the audio data live in separate parts of the file, changing a title or swapping the cover art never touches the audio frames. This editor reads the existing tag block, lets you change the fields you care about, then writes a new tag block and copies every audio frame across exactly as it was. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded, so there is no quality loss, even after editing the same file several times.

Which fields matter, and where

Title, Artist and Album are read by almost everything, from a phone's lock screen to a car's head unit, so they are worth getting right first. Album artist matters once you have more than one track from the same release, since it groups an album together instead of scattering tracks under each track's own Artist field. Year, Track and Disc numbers control sort order in most players; a track number can be written as a plain number or as position over total, like 3/12, and most software understands either.

Genre is free text in ID3v2, so you are not limited to an old fixed list, write whatever fits. Composer is mostly used by classical and score libraries that separate the writer from the performer. Comment is a catch-all some DJ software and distributors read for internal notes, worth clearing if a previous export left something behind. Cover art is what phones, smart speakers and car displays show while the track plays, and it is the field most downloads are missing entirely.

Cover art sizing, formats, and a few gotchas

For cover art, JPEG is the safest format, with PNG as a fallback for artwork that needs sharp edges or transparency. Aim for a square image somewhere between 600 and 1400 pixels a side and under about 500 KB. A bigger file is not sharper in any way that matters on a phone screen or a car display, it just makes the MP3 heavier to load.

A few gotchas. If a file only carries an ID3v1 tag, its 30-character fields truncate anything longer and it cannot hold artwork at all, so adding a proper ID3v2 tag fixes both at once. ID3v2.3 is still the version most car stereos, older DJ apps and Windows Explorer read reliably; ID3v2.4 adds UTF-8 support for non-Latin titles but a few older devices handle it inconsistently. This editor only reads MP3 files, so a WAV or FLAC needs the audio converter first.

How to Edit MP3 Tags Online

Three steps, all inside your browser

1

Add your MP3

Drop in an MP3 up to 200 MB. It is read straight from your disk and never uploaded, and its existing ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4 or ID3v1 tags load automatically.

Tips: This editor reads MP3 files only; convert a WAV or FLAC first with the audio converter.

2

Edit the tags and cover art

Update Title, Artist, Album, Album artist, Year, Track, Disc, Genre, Composer and Comment, then replace or remove the embedded cover image.

Tips: Keep cover art around 600 to 1400 px square and under 500 KB so it loads quickly on phones and car displays.

3

Save the tagged MP3

Download a new file with your updated tags. Only the tag header is rewritten; the audio frames are copied across untouched, so there is no quality loss.

Tips: Frames this editor does not display, like lyrics or custom tags, are kept exactly as they were.

MP3 Tag Editor Questions

How ID3 tags work, and why editing them never touches your audio.

No. This tool rewrites only the ID3 tag header and copies the audio frames across exactly as they are, so the sound quality after saving is identical to what it was before you edited anything.
ID3v2.3 is the most widely compatible version, read correctly by Windows Explorer, iTunes, older car stereos and many DJ apps. ID3v2.4 adds UTF-8 text encoding and a cleaner year field called TDRC, which helps with non-Latin titles but a few older devices read less reliably.
This usually happens when the artwork is too large, saved in a format other than JPEG or PNG, or the file only has an old ID3v1 tag, which cannot store images at all. A JPEG around 600 to 1400 px square and under about 500 KB is the safest choice for phones and car displays.
Frames that are not listed in the editor, such as embedded lyrics or custom text frames, are left in the file exactly as they were. Only the fields you actually change get rewritten.
No. Reading the existing tags, editing them and rewriting the file all happen in your browser tab, and the MP3 never leaves your device at any point.
This editor works with MP3 files and their ID3 tags only. Convert a WAV, FLAC or other format to MP3 first with the audio converter, then tag the result here.
