How the pitch shift works here

Shifting pitch without touching tempo takes two FFmpeg filters working together. First asetrate changes the sample rate the audio is read at, which moves the pitch up or down but also changes the playback speed as a side effect, the same way a turntable sounds higher and faster at 45 RPM than at 33. Then atempo takes that faster or slower result and time-stretches it back to the original duration, cancelling out the speed change while leaving the pitch shift in place.

With Keep the Tempo switched off, the tool stops after the first step: asetrate alone, so you get the full turntable effect, pitch and length moving together. That mode is a genuinely different sound, not just a shortcut, because there is no time-stretching involved, so it stays cleaner at large shifts than the tempo-locked mode does.

Choosing a shift for the job

For singing along or karaoke, start with small moves of 1 to 4 semitones toward your comfortable range and listen back before going further; most voices need less correction than people expect. For matching an instrument, count the actual interval: a guitar tuned down a half step needs -1 semitone, a full step down needs -2, and a capo removed needs the shift the capo used to add.

For transposing a backing track into a new key for a band, work out the number of semitones between the old and new key first, since going the wrong direction is an easy mistake, then apply it with Keep the Tempo on so the rest of the arrangement still lines up with a click track or a drummer.

Quality limits and practical notes

Shifts inside roughly plus or minus 5 semitones keep vocals sounding natural, since the formant movement is small enough to pass as a different singer rather than a processed one. Beyond about 7 to 8 semitones, expect an audible thinning or a slightly cartoonish quality on voices, though instruments like guitar, piano and strings tolerate larger shifts more gracefully than a lead vocal does.

Export to WAV if the shifted track is going into another audio editor next, so you are not stacking a second round of MP3 compression on top of the shift. Processing time scales with the length of the source file and the size of the shift, but a typical song still finishes in well under a minute on a modern laptop or phone.

No. FFmpeg.wasm, a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, runs the whole shift inside the browser tab you have open. The audio file never travels to a server.

A small shift of a few semitones is close to transparent. Push past about 7 semitones and voices start to pick up a hollow, chipmunk-like or robotic character, because the formants, the resonances that make a voice sound human, move along with the pitch instead of staying put.
With Keep the Tempo on, the pitch moves while the song's length stays exactly the same. Turn it off and the tool behaves like a turntable playing at the wrong speed, so pitch and length change together and a higher pitch also means a shorter track.
Singers move a backing track into a comfortable range, karaoke fans nudge a song to match their voice, guitarists shift a track down a half step to match a drop tuning, and producers transpose a sample before dropping it into a new arrangement.
