A Timer Built for Practice Sessions, Not Just Minutes

Set up warm-up, scales, repertoire, sight-reading, improvisation and cool-down blocks, add or reorder them, then run a drift-free countdown with a soft bell between sections. Your plan is saved in this browser.

The session plan and countdown both run in this tab. Your plan is saved only in this browser, and nothing about your practice is sent anywhere.

How the session plan works

Six presets cover the parts of a typical session: warm-up (5 minutes), scales (10), repertoire (20), sight-reading (10), improvisation (10) and cool-down (5). Add the ones you want, drop the ones you don't, and drag to put them in whatever order suits the session, whether that's warming up before scales or working sight-reading in while your focus is freshest. Nothing about the structure is fixed; the presets are just a fast way to start instead of typing in every block by hand.

Each section counts down on screen once you press start, and a soft synthesized bell, a plain tone rather than a recorded sample, marks the moment one section ends and the next begins. You can pause mid-section or skip ahead if something runs short. The countdown is calculated from real timestamps rather than a simple tick counter, so it stays accurate even if the tab sits in the background, and the screen is kept awake while a section is running.

Reading the countdown, with a worked example

Warm-up, scales, repertoire and sight-reading, at their default lengths, already add up to the default 45-minute session: 5 plus 10 plus 20 plus 10. Add the improvisation block for a 55-minute plan, or the cool-down as well for a full 60-minute run through every preset. A teacher building a lesson plan might reorder things, putting sight-reading right after warm-up while a student's attention is sharpest, then saving repertoire, the longest block, for last.

When the last section finishes, you get a short summary: how many sections you completed and the total time you actually spent practicing. If you paused partway through and never resumed a section, that shows up too, since the summary reflects what ran, not just what was planned. The plan itself stays saved in this browser, so reopening the page later brings back the same blocks in the same order without rebuilding it from scratch.

Limits and what this timer doesn't do

This is a structure and countdown tool, not a listening one. It doesn't detect which notes you played, keep a beat like a metronome, or check your tuning, it only tracks time and tells you when a block ends. If you want a steady click while you run scales, or a tuning check before you start, those are separate tools; pair this timer with them rather than expecting it to cover that ground on its own.

The bell is generated in the browser, so there's no audio file to load and no delay when a section ends. Your plan is saved to this browser's local storage, which means it stays on this device and this browser only, it won't follow you to a different computer or browser automatically. Closing the tab mid-session stops the countdown; there's no background timer running once the page is gone.

What the presets, countdown and saved plan mean in practice.

InputA session plan built from six presets (warm-up, scales, repertoire, sight-reading, improvisation, cool-down) or your own custom blocks.
OutputA running countdown per section, a bell at each transition, and an end-of-session summary of what was completed.
MethodTimestamp-based countdown rather than a tick counter, a synthesized bell tone, and the Wake Lock API to keep the screen on.
Range/LimitsDefault session is 45 minutes; every section length, order and total are adjustable, up to a full 60-minute plan with all six presets.

How to Build and Run a Practice Session

Three steps, all inside your browser

1

Build your session

Start from the default 45-minute plan, built from the warm-up, scales, repertoire and sight-reading presets, or add improvisation and cool-down blocks and drag to reorder everything.

Tips: Shorter, more specific blocks are easier to reorder later than one long undivided practice slot.

2

Start, pause and skip

Press start and each section counts down on screen. Pause anytime, skip ahead if a section runs short, and a soft synthesized bell marks the end of every section.

Tips: The countdown runs off real timestamps, not a tick counter, so it stays accurate even if the tab sits in the background; the screen also stays awake while a section is running.

3

Check your summary

When the plan finishes, see the sections you completed and the total time you actually practiced. The plan itself stays saved in this browser for next time.

Tips: Reordering a saved plan before your next session takes seconds, no need to rebuild it from scratch.

Music Practice Timer Questions

How the session presets, countdown and bell work

The default plan is built from the warm-up (5 minutes), scales (10), repertoire (20) and sight-reading (10) presets, which add up to 45 minutes. You can add the improvisation or cool-down presets, both worth adding time to, or remove and reorder any block before you start.
No. Each section's remaining time is calculated from the actual clock rather than counted down tick by tick, so pausing, skipping or leaving the tab in the background doesn't throw off the total. The bell is a plain synthesized tone rather than an audio sample, so it plays instantly with no loading delay.
No. The plan you build and the timer itself run entirely in this browser tab. Your sections are saved to this browser's local storage so the plan is still there next time you open the page, and nothing about your practice is uploaded.
Splitting practice into named, timed blocks, like scales, repertoire and sight-reading, keeps any one part from quietly eating the whole session. A teacher can also hand a student a ready-made plan with the presets already set, instead of a vague instruction to practice for 45 minutes.
The timer requests a wake lock while a section is counting down, so a phone or tablet propped on a music stand doesn't dim or lock mid-scale. It releases the wake lock as soon as you pause or the session ends.
Yes. The metronome keeps a steady click for scales and repertoire, and the tuner checks your instrument is in tune before you start, both running in the browser the same way this timer does.
