Audio Fade - Smooth Fade In and Fade Out

Set a fade in and a fade out up to 15 seconds each, pick the curve shape that suits music or speech, and export a track with no abrupt starts or endings. Runs on your device.

The fade is rendered in this tab. Your file stays on your device the whole time.

How the fade is applied

This tool runs FFmpeg's afade filter twice, once at the start of the file for the fade-in and once near the end for the fade-out, each ramping the volume between silence and full level over the length you set, from 0 to 15 seconds. The fade-out's start point is calculated automatically from the file's total duration, so a 4-second fade-out on a two-minute track always lands exactly at the last four seconds, with no need to work out the timing yourself.

The curve you choose controls the shape of that ramp, not its length. Linear moves the volume at a constant rate across the whole fade, which is simple but can sound slightly abrupt, especially near the end of a fade-out where a constant rate suddenly meets silence. Logarithmic, exponential and quarter sine curves instead change more slowly at the start and more quickly near the end, which tracks how human hearing perceives loudness changes and tends to sound smoother and less noticeable as a fade.

Choosing a curve and a length for the material

Music generally fades more naturally on a logarithmic or quarter sine curve, since a linear fade-out on a sustained chord or a held note can sound like it drops off unevenly rather than melting away. Speech behaves differently: a short linear fade, often under a second, works fine because there is rarely a long sustained tone to reveal the curve shape, and a longer fade on speech tends to just sound like the words are trailing off oddly rather than smoothly.

Typical lengths depend on the job. A song intro fade-in usually sits around 1 to 3 seconds, enough to avoid a hard start without delaying the track noticeably. A podcast bed under narration, music playing quietly behind a host, often uses a 2 to 4 second fade in both directions so it does not distract from the speech. A ringtone needs something much shorter, close to 1 second, which is exactly what the ringtone maker's built-in fade uses on top of its 30-second cut.

Quality, limits and practical use

A fade only scales existing samples up or down over time, so it adds no noise, distortion or pitch change on its own. The only real failure mode is a mismatch between fade length and the material: a very short fade over a busy, loud passage can still read as an abrupt cut rather than a smooth transition, so it is worth previewing the join rather than assuming any fade length works everywhere.

This is the tool for adding a clean start and end to a track, a podcast bed, or a sound effect that currently cuts in or out sharply. If you only need part of a longer recording faded, trim the section first with the audio trimmer, then fade the result here; for a 30-second ringtone with a fade already built in, the ringtone maker handles both steps at once.

How to Fade Audio In and Out Online

Three steps, all inside your browser

1

Add your track

Drop in an MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG or FLAC up to 200 MB. It is read from your disk and never uploaded.

Tips: If you only need a slice of a longer file, cut it down with the audio trimmer first, then fade the result.

2

Set the fade lengths and curve

Choose a fade-in and fade-out length from 0 to 15 seconds, and pick Linear, Exponential, Logarithmic or Quarter Sine. The fade-out is placed automatically at the end of the file.

Tips: Logarithmic or quarter sine usually sound smoother on music; a short linear fade works well on speech.

3

Preview and download

Listen to the fades in context, then save the result as MP3, WAV or M4A.

Tips: Need a 30-second cut with a fade baked in for a phone? Try the ringtone maker instead.

Audio Fade Questions

Picking the right length and curve for a clean fade.

No. The fade is applied by a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg running inside this tab, so the file is read from your disk and processed on your own device. You can check this yourself in your browser's network panel while a fade is applied.
You can load MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG or FLAC up to 200 MB, and export the faded result as MP3, WAV or M4A no matter what format you started from.
No. A fade only scales the volume of the samples it covers up or down over time; it does not add noise or distortion. The one thing to watch is a fade set too short against a busy passage, which can sound like an abrupt cut rather than a smooth fade, so a short clip usually wants a shorter fade than a long track does.
Linear changes volume at a constant rate and can sound slightly mechanical, especially on a slow fade-out. Logarithmic, exponential and quarter sine curves change more gradually at first and faster near the end, which tends to match how human hearing perceives loudness and usually sounds smoother on music. Quarter sine is a common default for a natural-sounding fade; logarithmic often suits a slow fade-out best.
It is placed automatically at the end of the file, based on the file's total duration and the fade-out length you set. A 5-second fade-out on a 3-minute track starts at 2 minutes 55 seconds and finishes exactly at the end, so you do not need to calculate a start point yourself.
Podcast intros and outros usually sit around 2 to 4 seconds so they do not eat into the spoken content, while a song intro fade-in of 1 to 3 seconds feels natural without delaying the track. For a phone ringtone specifically, use the ringtone maker instead, which caps the clip at 30 seconds and adds a short fade-out for you; use the audio trimmer first if you need to select a specific section before fading it here.
