How ID3 tags are stored, and why editing them is lossless

An MP3 file is really two things stitched together: a block of ID3 tag data and a stream of audio frames the player decodes into sound. ID3v2 tags sit at the start of the file as a small header followed by individual frames, one per field, TIT2 for title, TPE1 for artist, APIC for the cover image. ID3v1 is different: a fixed 128-byte block at the very end of the file, with just 30 characters each for title, artist and album.

Because the tag data and the audio data live in separate parts of the file, changing a title or swapping the cover art never touches the audio frames. This editor reads the existing tag block, lets you change the fields you care about, then writes a new tag block and copies every audio frame across exactly as it was. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded, so there is no quality loss, even after editing the same file several times.

Which fields matter, and where

Title, Artist and Album are read by almost everything, from a phone's lock screen to a car's head unit, so they are worth getting right first. Album artist matters once you have more than one track from the same release, since it groups an album together instead of scattering tracks under each track's own Artist field. Year, Track and Disc numbers control sort order in most players; a track number can be written as a plain number or as position over total, like 3/12, and most software understands either.

Genre is free text in ID3v2, so you are not limited to an old fixed list, write whatever fits. Composer is mostly used by classical and score libraries that separate the writer from the performer. Comment is a catch-all some DJ software and distributors read for internal notes, worth clearing if a previous export left something behind. Cover art is what phones, smart speakers and car displays show while the track plays, and it is the field most downloads are missing entirely.

Cover art sizing, formats, and a few gotchas

For cover art, JPEG is the safest format, with PNG as a fallback for artwork that needs sharp edges or transparency. Aim for a square image somewhere between 600 and 1400 pixels a side and under about 500 KB. A bigger file is not sharper in any way that matters on a phone screen or a car display, it just makes the MP3 heavier to load.

A few gotchas. If a file only carries an ID3v1 tag, its 30-character fields truncate anything longer and it cannot hold artwork at all, so adding a proper ID3v2 tag fixes both at once. ID3v2.3 is still the version most car stereos, older DJ apps and Windows Explorer read reliably; ID3v2.4 adds UTF-8 support for non-Latin titles but a few older devices handle it inconsistently. This editor only reads MP3 files, so a WAV or FLAC needs the audio converter first.
