What's actually inside a MIDI file, and how playback works

A MIDI file doesn't contain audio. It stores a list of note-on and note-off events, their timing, velocity and which instrument each track is nominally assigned to, plus tempo and time-signature markers in its header. This player reads that header to show duration, BPM and time signature, then lists every track with the instrument name it declares and how many notes it contains, all before you've pressed play at all.

Sound only exists once something renders those events into audio, and the instrument doing the rendering decides what it actually sounds like. This player renders every track through one sampled grand piano, regardless of what instrument the file names for that track. That makes a piano part sound accurate and a string or brass part sound like piano notes playing the same pitches and rhythm, which is enough to check what's there without needing a full multi-instrument synth.

Using the track list and piano roll, with an example

Take a typical four-track arrangement: melody, chords, bass and a drum track. The drum track, since it has no real pitched content to render, comes through as piano notes hitting essentially random pitches; muting it is usually the first thing worth doing. Solo the melody track on its own, and the piano roll shows every note in that track against a moving playhead, useful for checking a transcription note by note rather than trying to pick it out of the full mix by ear.

Tempo playback runs from 0.5x up to 1.5x without changing which notes play, which is useful for slowing a fast passage down to practice it before bringing it back to full speed. Looping a section repeats it automatically once the playhead reaches the end point, so you can drop a difficult bar into a loop and run it as many times as you need without re-seeking by hand each time.

Limits and what this player isn't

The 5 MB file size limit covers almost any standard Type 0 or Type 1 MIDI file; a file that size usually holds a very large number of tracks or an unusually dense note count. This is a playback and inspection tool, not an editor, there's no way to change notes, add tracks or export anything other than what you hear.

Because everything renders through one piano, this player is not the right way to judge how an arrangement will actually sound with its intended instruments, a DAW or a full General MIDI synth does that job. It's built for a narrower one instead: confirming what notes and timing a MIDI file actually contains, at a speed and volume you control.

Drop in a MIDI file

Load a .mid or .midi file up to 5 MB. The player reads its tempo, time signature and duration, and lists every track with its declared instrument name and note count.

Tips: A file with more than a handful of tracks is normal; drum and percussion tracks are common and worth checking before you press play.

Mute the tracks you don't want

Every track plays back through the same sampled grand piano, so a drum or bass track sounds like piano notes instead of its real instrument. Mute or solo tracks to isolate the part you actually want to hear.

Tips: If a track is named something like Channel 10 or Percussion, mute it first; a piano rendering of a drum pattern isn't useful.

Slow it down and follow along

Play from 0.5x to 1.5x speed, loop a section, and watch the playhead move across a simple piano-roll view while you seek to any point.

Tips: Slowing a fast passage to around 0.6x or 0.7x without changing the notes is a quick way to learn a tricky bar before bringing it back to full speed.
