Find Your Vocal Range in Two Notes

Hold your lowest comfortable note for a second, then your highest, and this tool detects both from your microphone. See your range in note names, octaves and Hz, a rough voice type from bass to soprano, and a bar comparing you to typical ranges.

Pitch detection runs live from your microphone in this tab. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

How the two-step test works

The test asks for two notes: hold your lowest comfortable note for about a second, then do the same for your highest. Pitch detection runs on your device as you sing each one, converting what it hears into a frequency in Hz and then into the nearest note name and octave, the same way a tuner identifies a note from an instrument. A held, sustained tone gives the detector a stable signal to lock onto; a quick blip or a sliding note is harder to read accurately.

From those two notes, the tool works out your range two ways: in octaves and semitones, and as a comparison against typical voice-type ranges. The semitone count is just the interval between your lowest and highest note, and the octave figure is that same interval expressed in whole and partial octaves, so a two-octave range shows as exactly that rather than an odd number of semitones.

Reading your result, with an example

Say your lowest note comes back as A2 (110 Hz) and your highest as A4 (440 Hz). That's exactly two octaves, 24 semitones, and it overlaps the baritone range (A2 to A4) almost exactly while also touching the top of bass and the bottom of tenor. The comparison bar shows where your two extremes sit against each typical range at a glance, rather than just listing numbers.

Voice type here comes from where your two extremes overlap with the typical ranges: bass E2-E4, baritone A2-A4, tenor C3-C5, alto F3-F5, mezzo-soprano A3-A5 and soprano C4-C6. These ranges overlap each other in the middle, which is normal, plenty of singers land somewhere between two neighboring types rather than squarely in one.

Limits and how to use the result

This is a rough guide, not a vocal assessment. Real voice classification also weighs tessitura, the range you can sing comfortably and with good tone for extended stretches, and timbre, the actual colour of the voice, neither of which a two-note extreme test can measure. Two singers with the exact same lowest and highest note can end up with quite different comfortable voice types once tessitura and tone are considered.

Results also depend on a reasonably quiet room and a microphone that can pick up your extremes clearly, a phone's built-in mic is usually fine for this. Use the result as a starting point: to pick a comfortable key for a song with the chord transposer or pitch shifter, to get a rough sense of where a voice sits for choir placement, or to compare against an earlier test after some warm-up practice.

How to Test Your Vocal Range Online

Three steps, all inside your browser

1

Allow the microphone

Grant microphone access when prompted. Nothing is recorded or saved, the microphone is only used live to detect pitch.

Tips: A quiet room and a decent built-in or headset microphone work fine; you don't need a studio mic for this.

2

Sing your lowest, then your highest

Hold your lowest comfortable note for about a second, then repeat for your highest. Pitch detection runs on your device as you sing each one.

Tips: Sing full, sustained notes rather than a quick blip; a note held for at least a second gives the detector something stable to lock onto.

3

Read your range and voice type

See both notes with their octave and Hz, your total range in octaves and semitones, a rough voice type by overlap with typical ranges, and a comparison bar.

Tips: Treat the voice type as a starting point, not a verdict; it only looks at your two extremes, not your tessitura or tone.

Vocal Range Test Questions

How the two-note test, voice type and comparison bar work

Once you know your range in note names, compare it to the highest and lowest notes in a song you're considering. If the song's peak note sits above your detected high note, try the chord transposer or the pitch shifter to move it into a range that's actually comfortable to sing.
It's a rough guide, not a vocal assessment. Voice type here is based only on where your two extreme notes overlap with typical ranges like tenor or alto, but real classification also depends on tessitura, the range you actually sing comfortably in most of the time, and timbre, neither of which this test measures.
No. Pitch detection runs live on your device as you sing, and nothing is recorded, saved or uploaded. Closing the tab clears everything.
The two extremes are all the test needs to calculate your range in octaves and semitones. Asking for one at a time, held steadily, also gives the pitch detector a clean, stable signal instead of trying to track a note during a fast run or slide.
Bass runs roughly E2 to E4, baritone A2 to A4, tenor C3 to C5, alto F3 to F5, mezzo-soprano A3 to A5 and soprano C4 to C6. These overlap quite a bit in the middle, which is normal, plenty of singers sit comfortably across two neighboring types.
Retake the test after a warm-up or over a few weeks and compare the numbers yourself, there's no saved history built in. For a structured warm-up to run beforehand, the music practice timer can time a warm-up block before you test.
