The Circle of Fifths is a visual representation of the relationships between the 12 tones of the chromatic scale. Keys are arranged so that adjacent keys differ by a perfect fifth (7 semitones). Moving clockwise adds sharps, while moving counterclockwise adds flats. It's an essential tool for understanding key signatures, chord progressions, and harmonic relationships.
It's called the Circle of Fifths because each key is a perfect fifth (5 notes in a major scale) away from its neighbors. For example, G is a fifth above C, D is a fifth above G, and so on. This interval relationship creates a natural flow that musicians have used for centuries to compose and understand music.
The Circle of Fifths helps you find chords that sound good together. Adjacent keys share many notes, making them natural choices for modulation. Common progressions like I-IV-V-I follow the circle's pattern. You can also use it to find the relative minor of any major key (inner ring) for emotional variation in your songs.
Relative major and minor keys share the same key signature but have different tonal centers. For example, C major and A minor both have no sharps or flats. The relative minor is always 3 semitones below its relative major. Our tool shows these relationships - the outer ring displays major keys, and the middle ring shows their relative minors.
The Circle of Fifths is the best mnemonic tool! Clockwise from C: each key adds one sharp (G=1#, D=2#, A=3#...). Counter-clockwise: each key adds one flat (F=1b, Bb=2b, Eb=3b...). Sharps are added in order: F-C-G-D-A-E-B. Flats are added: B-E-A-D-G-C-F (reverse order).
Enharmonic keys sound the same but are written differently. At the bottom of the circle, F#/Gb and C#/Db are enharmonic pairs. F# major has 6 sharps, while Gb major has 6 flats - they sound identical but are notated differently. Musicians choose based on context and readability.
